The Clearing Speaks: Inspirations From The Clearing
The Clearing Speaks is a combination of two unique exhibitions celebrating both visual and written work inspired by The Clearing's beautiful landscape, charming buildings and creative spirit. This special fund-raising event is one of many ways The Clearing community will be celebrating The Clearing's 75th anniversary in 2010. Instructors, students and friends are invited to share their artistic interpretations and perspectives of this wonderful place through unique and inspirational works of art and writing.
Exhibit 1: Visual Inspirations
March 1, 2010 Submission deadline: Entries must be received
March 15, 2010 Notification of acceptance (or non-acceptance) will be mailed
April 15, 2010 Accepted art work needs to arrive at The Clearing

The Clearing Speaks is open to all two-dimensional and three-dimensional artists working in any media, including but not limited to painting, drawing, fiber art, photography, carving, clay, glass, metal, stone, paper, printmaking and mixed media. The focus of all art should be The Clearing in any form from representational to abstract. All artwork must be original and be available for raffle from May 3 - December 17 of 2010. Any non-original artwork will not be accepted. Entrants must be at least 18 years old.
All accepted work will be judged by a panel of Clearing staff, board members and select artists on March 1, 2010. Awards will be given for the following categories: Best of Show, People's Choice and three Honorable Mentions.
Images must be submitted on CD or attached in an email in JPEG format, with the larger dimension set to 800 pixels, 300 dpi.
Be sure to label JPEGS in the following format: Last name, underscore, first initial, underscore, title of piece,
file extension. Example: smith_J_trees_at_the_clearing.jpg
Burn CDs to be read by a PC and send to The Clearing, P.O. 65, Ellison Bay, WI 54210.
Label both the CD and CD case clearly with artist's name. Be sure to keep a record of your entry information.
Create and save on your submitted CD a document with your name and contact Information (email, telephone number,
and mailing address) together with an inventory list of all submitted artwork indicating the title, media, dimensions and year created.

instructions for CD submissions above.

Door County residents may submit actual artwork. Space is limited. Please call Erik at The Clearing to make arrangements. 920-854-4088
All accepted artwork will be displayed in the Jens Jensen Visitor Center at The Clearing. Space will be limited. Therefore, all accepted artwork must not exceed 500 square inches, including frame, and framed with plexiglass or otherwise professionally presented with wires or hanging devices (no saw-tooth hangers).
Entering this competition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes by The Clearing. CDs will not be returned.
There are no entry fees. You may submit as many pieces as you wish. NOTE: Artists are responsible for ALL shipping arrangements and payments.
The Clearing will retain a 70% percent commission on all raffle sales with the artist retaining a 30% commission on
their individually raffled item. Items may also be fully donated to The Clearing.
All artwork will be raffled individually during the exhibition.
Exhibition dates: May 3 - December 17, 2010
Artwork must be available for the duration of the exhibition.
The Clearing reserves the right not to exhibit any artwork that differs significantly from the submitted image.
Work that does not comply with the terms of the prospectus will not be included in the exhibition and will be returned at the artist's expense.

The Clearing Speaks is open to all writers. Submissions may include but are not limited to poetry, fiction, short-story and personal accounts. The focus of all work should relate to The Clearing. Entrants must be at least 18 years old.
All accepted work will be judged by a panel of Clearing staff, board members and select writers on March 1, 2010.
Awards will be given for the top three written pieces. These and other selected pieces will be published in a special
issue of Siftings, The Clearing's newsletter.
Submissions must be less than 3 pages.
You may submit as many pieces as you wish.
You may mail or email manuscripts. Email submissions should be directed to Mike Schneider at mike@theclearing.org.
Please include the title, your name and contact information on each submission. Include no more than one work per page.
